Curtain Down!

Lampeter Youth brought the curtain down on their season with a hard fought win over a spirited Kidwelly side. With the scoreline perhaps flattering the visitors, Kidwelly were undone by the fitter Maroon squad. Indeed a squad effort it was with every single player who has trained with the 'Young Bloods' fielded before the season came to a close, some of which would not get onto the waterboy squad of many a side. Such is the ethos of comradery and unity in this set up, playing such youngsters as the incorrigble Alberto Wolfgang Wolsley in this meaningful league encounter boosted not only the players confidence but has paid reward for all the hard work put in by these fringe players with all credit going to both players and coaches for their hard work this season. Non contested from the start suited Lampeter as the rampaging Jewish bullock Gareth Isaacs toyed with the home pack, picking, skipping and making hard yards whenever called upon. Lampeter were forced into changes in the first five minutes of the game with exciting prospect Callum Wilson being carried off with an ankle problem. Moving Wing Steff Evans to Centre proved inspiring to the player as he produced a stellar Man Of The Match performace in his Inside Centre role sadly whilst playing his last game for Lampeter Youth. We wish him well and hope he stays within the club pathway programme of developing young players into fine senior rugby men. Tries for Isaacs,Captain John Heath, poacher Matt Jenkins along with a cheeky touchdown from Sam Whittingham in the first half all but sealed the game as a contest with the home side tiring as the night wore on. Second half scores for Morgan Lewis and feisty Outside Centre Tomos Rees put a gloss on the scoreline which in fact flattered the visitors. Jubilation of winning the League with this and other wins were shortlived however as news from the Union broke that inexplicably Llanelli Wanderers had won the Championship on a 'League Points Gained/Win Ratio'. Lampeter Youth however hold their heads high knowing full well they have dodged no games, by playing the stronger teams in the competion during the run in, winning some and losing some, yet particating fully with young men who want to play rugby not play the rules. A special thank you goes to Kidwelly RFC for fielding a side so late on in the season with so many injuries and suspensions to their squad along with a massive applause to all involed at Furnace RFC, players and coaches for playing week in week out with limited resources, a fine example that some neighbouring clubs may want to heed. Onwards and upwards for next season as Lampeter acknowledge they wont be taken lightly next season by clubs who may have been a little shocked by their transformation this season under the guidance of Gerallt Thomas and Gizmo Jones, who have got the lads beleiving in themselves.
